NOTICE: Tower of Light Ezine is now open for submissions during the normal reading periods.

Tower of Light has reading periods. You may submit your story as early as one month before each reading period begins, and I will acknowledge receipt as quickly as possible. When the reading period ends, I will no longer accept submissions until the next. Please allow six to twelve weeks for a decision (from the start of the reading period or receipt of acknowledgement, whichever comes last).

The reading periods are as follows:

February 1 through March 31
August 1 through September 30

Tower of Light is always seeking fantasy artwork!

If you are a fantasy writer or artist and would like to write or draw for Tower of Light, please read the following guidelines first:

1. Fiction

I prefer short stories between 500 and 4000 words. This word count is firm. I will publish almost any kind of fantasy, especially genre blending work such as dark fantasy, urban fantasy, science fantasy, and superhero fantasy. Sword and sorcery and traditional fantasy are also fine as long as they have fairly original plots and – more importantly – deeply interesting characters. I will only consider stories closer to science fiction if they have a mystical or spiritual element.

NO erotic fantasy! Please don’t submit anything like this.

I am not looking to serialize anything at this time.

I am looking specifically for character driven stories. Yes, all stories are about characters, but there are differences between plot driven and character driven stories. For a story to be character driven, the plot will actually depend on the character’s decisions. For more information, please read Character Driven Conflict by Jean Lorrah

Also, a lot of story ideas have been used often lately. This doesn’t mean they’re bad, but we could probably use a break from them. Since Tower of Light is a free Ezine, the current rate of pay is $5.00 (US) for stories – paid on publication. ALL payment will be made through PayPal – NO exceptions.

The current rate of publication is two issues per year. In general, a story stays on site in the archives forever, but this is negotiable.

Tower of Light pays for one time electronic rights and (negotiable) archive rights only. Specifically, your story will be published one time in the on-line magazine, and added to the archives with your permission. Any story you publish is yours.

Submit your story in the body of the email (NOT as an attachment).

Please take not of the format below. This is important:

A. Anything you want in Italics should be in Italics, since this makes it easier for me.
B. There should be TWO SPACES at the beginning of every sentence!
C. Your name and email address must appear above the story in the body of your email. Please indicate what name you want to appear in your by-line, if different from your real name. NOTE: Any submission that does not include the email address will be deleted unread.
D. Include an approximate word count and title in the email. If you want a bio, please include a short paragraph and clearly mark it as “Biography.”

Although it isn’t necessary for Tower of Light, it’s always a good idea to know the proper manuscript format, which you can find at <a href=www.shunn.net/format/story.html>William Shunn’s Short Story Format</a>.

Email your submission to msouth847@yahoo.com. You subject line should say “Submission.” It should look something like this: “Submission: Your Story Title.” I will acknowledge your submission as quickly as possible and aim for six to twelve weeks for a final decision. Lately I’ve been rather slow with my responses, so feel free to query if you don’t hear from me by then.

2. Artwork

I prefer fantasy pictures only, although they can blend genres just like the stories. No science fiction or horror, please, and NO erotica at all.

Tower of Light buys the right to publish one picture as the cover of one particular issue, along with (negotiable) archive rights (with you permission). All rights belong to the artist.

Tower of Light pays $5.00 for each picture on publication. I will buy only ONE picture per issue.

Send your image file either as JPEG or GIF by email and write “Art Sub” in the subject line. As for stories, I will acknowledge your submission as quickly as possible and aim for six to twelve weeks for a final decision.
